Houston Heights is a historic neighborhood in the northern part of the city of Houston, Texas. It is located north of Downtown Houston and inside the 610 Loop, roughly bounded by Interstate 10, Highway 249 (North Main), Studemont Street, and Yale Street. Initiated in 1891 as a streetcar suburb called Northern Heights, it was first occupied by haute bourgeoisie African Americans and German immigrants. Northern Heights quickly became a moderately prosperous upper class community with shopping centers and trolley service along Lyons Avenue until after World War I. In 1918 The University of St Thomas formed just south in what had been Galveston County but in 1940 Harris County was created from that as well as parts of Walker County when it became known that several cities including Bunker Hill were merging into one larger city which would take up most of eastern Texas at that time.
